Situational Leadership (Ch 7)

I agree with the concepts described on page 191 in box 7.7. It is true that leaders should evaluate the situation they are in and choose a style that would work best with their audience or followers. I believe this is relatively easy to do when dealing with a few people or an homogenous group of people. However, the reality is very different. As the work environment evolves, small group of people are rarely homogenous. Groups might be composed by people from different countries, cultures, gender and age group. Some people might be new to the group while others might have worked for a specific department for many years. Therefore finding the right style for a group of people becomes more difficult.

I agree with u.. initially i did not understand the concept of situational leadership. But i am in total agreement with the concept. The strategies that the leader needs to adapt must depend on the situation as it changes from situation to situation. And i even agree with your part about people with different background which requires the leader to think about their strategies

Situational leadership is certainly more sophisticated than the trait approach. But as you point out (and I just blogged about this in response to another student's post), groups are rarely homogeneous, so different people with a group may need different styles of leadership. It also assumes that leadership functions belong to one person, but in my experience in all types of organizations, leadership responsibilities often shift among organization members depending on the task and members' expertise. Granted, it seems like some people never take on a leadership role. But generally several do step forward and move the group along to achieve its objectives.

With the world becoming a global village, homogeneity is barely found anywhere, nowadays it's all about diversity. It can be found in the corporate world as well as any walk of life that you should choose to adopt. As for leadership, it should evolve with the passage of time as well as with the group that needs a leader. Diversity can prove to be a great challenge for a group leader as then he'll have to chalk out a plan that doesn't go against any one's sensibilities. A good leader changes track in the blink of an eye to accommodate any change in the agenda and in doing so takes every one along too.Different situations require different strategies and same is the case with a non-homogeneous group. To move forward taking along the whole group is indeed a daunting task but we will find people who are willing to take on this role and are good at it too.
